Okay, so some great ideas start out as pure flukes. When ParkGrounds opened almost three years ago, the dog park was, dare we say, just a bonus feature. There was a huge outdoor space attached to the coffeehouse so the dog park seemed like as good a use as any. Not to mention it was a way to bring attention to the off-the-beaten path Reynoldstown location. No one at ParkGrounds knew they had hit pay dirt on a budding trend. Today, the dog park is as much a part of ParkGrounds as the great coffee. Located away from the trendier Midtown or Buckhead areas and bordering the more well-known hipster hood of Grant Park, ParkGrounds is quite neighborly.
On any given weekend, don’t be surprised to see as many as 25 dogs, along with their owners, soaking in quality time. Sit outside on a nice day and watch your baby play with the other canines or keep a watchful eye from the warm and cozy inside. There are rules, and keeping up with your pooch is numero uno. “You would think that with so many dogs out there, there wouldn’t be a lot of space to run but sometimes they run in packs,” says ParkGrounds general manager Alfred Lopez. “Sometimes they just like to chill-out.”
Comfortable dog park aside, not to mention unique, individual dog treats starting for as little as 25 cents, Lopez says “What really makes this place stand out is our great coffee.” ParkGrounds is no Starbucks copycat either. “The style of barista-ing that we do here is along the same lines as places like Aurora or Octane,” Lopez explains.
When it comes to brewing techniques, Lopez believes ParkGrounds stands alone in Atlanta. “As far as I know, and if anybody can correct me, they are more than welcomed to, we offer the most selection as far as brewing techniques in a single shop.” There are at least six, including Chemex, one of the most modern, and the Pour-Over, one of the most basic.
